The Tempest Poster (PDF)

The Wichita Shakespeare Company (WSC) opens its 2012 Shakespeare-in-the-Park series with “The Tempest.”  The last play fully written by Shakespeare during his career, it tells the story of Prospero (the former Duke of Milan) who was banished to a mystical island with his infant daughter Miranda.  Years pass and, while on the island, Prospero perfects his powers as a sorcerer in order to enact his revenge on those who wronged him. The story encompasses shipwrecks, mystical beings, a murder plot, and drunken jesters, all before the climactic resolution where Prospero ultimately learns to forgive.

The play is directed by Kathleen Barbara.  Kathleen is making her WSC directorial debut with ”The Tempest,” but has served as the drama instructor at Maize High School for many years.  The impressive cast assembled for this production includes Gary L Foiles as Prospero, Crystal Meek as Ariel, and Jillian Clough as Miranda. Others in the cast include Dan Schuster, Vonda Schuster, Mark Schuster, Ben Blankley, Ed Belsan, Mary Tush Green, Heather Jewell, Ben Smith, Isaac Banta, Miranda Windholz, Mindie Montoya, Kate Roach, and Emily Kerbs.

All shows will begin at 7:00 pm, with an approximate running time of an hour and a half.  As always, the play is performed free to all audiences but donations are accepted and appreciated.  Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and, of course, bug spray. In the event of inclement weather, there will be a message posted at 6 pm on the WSC line (316-655-2017) alerting if the show has been cancelled for that evening.

The Wichita Shakespeare Company (WSC) closes its 2011 Shakespeare-in-the-Park series with “Troilus and Cressida.”  This Trojan War-era play tells the story of Troilus and Cressida, two young lovers torn apart by the long-running war between the Greeks and the Trojans.  The play is difficult to categorize by genre, as it includes elements of both comedy and tragedy.  It had been neglected for several centuries – not coming into its own until the last century. For this reason, and due to its centric theme on the futility of war, it has frequently been called “the Shakespeare play for the 20th century.”

The play is directed by veteran WSC director Dan Schuster.  Previous WSC directing credits include “Coriolanus,” “Pericles,” “Measure for Measure,” “Two Noble Kinsmen,” “Cymbeline,” “Love’s Labours Lost,” and “The Winter’s Tale.” The impressive cast assembled for this production includes Ben Blankley as Troilus, Charlene Grinsell as Cressida, Jim Crawley as Achilles, and Kenneth Mitchell as Ulysses. Others in the cast include Elizabeth Anderson, Kate Corbin, Heather Jewell, Anna Kraus, April Karber, Vonda Schuster, David Weills, Eric Olson, Robert Esau Rutherford, Mark Schuster, Damian Padilla, Isaac Banta, and Joey LeCompte.

Shakespeare-in-the-Park will return to the very popular Central Riverside, Buffalo, and College Hill Parks in Wichita.  Parks in Andover, Park City, Derby, and Haysville will complete the tour.  All shows will begin at 7:00 pm, with an approximate running time of two hours.  The show is rated PG-13 due to violence and adult content.  As always, the play is performed free to all audiences but donations are accepted and appreciated.  Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and, of course, bug spray.

Auditions will be held at University Friends Church at 1840 W. University. Roles are available for 10 men and 3 women, ages 18 and up. Reading material will be provided. This is a Shakespeare-in-the-Park production. Rehearsals will begin in early August. The roles of Thersites and Pandarus have been pre-cast. TROILUS AND CRESSIDA is one of the most difficult plays in the Shakespeare canon – both in terms of content and in terms of its ability to be easily classified. In its day, the play has been referred to as a History, a Tragedy, and a Comedy. That said, it might seem to indicate that a performance of TROILUS AND CRESSIDA might be a jarring night of theatre. My answer to that would be – “Exactly.”

The play touches on the futility of war, homosexuality, and political
backstabbing; hardly easy topics any of them, and ones that the play explores but doesn’t necessarily answer. There are no tidy endings here – happy or sad. For this reason, the play has a very modern feel to it.

In my adaptation, I have stream lined the lengthy difficult speeches and aim to keep the action moving. I will also focus intensely with my actors on the meaning behind their words and the inter-relationships of the characters. In a play like this, with many epic characters (such as Ulysses and Achilles), it is important to bring these legendary figures down to a very human, imperfect level. I also plan on taking a slightly more feminist approach to the character of Cressida. Rather than just dismissing her as an unfaithful and wanton seductress, I aim to approach her as a young woman responding to difficult situations in the best manner that she can.

I hope that many of you will come explore with me this very dark, very
interesting play, in what will likely be the Kansas premiere of this Shakespeare work.

This is much to the pleasure of Kate’s family and friends. Kate’s father has refused to marry off the beautiful Bianca (Kate’s younger sister), to one of her many suitors, until Kate has found a husband of her own.

The play is directed by WSC veteran Vonda Schuster.  Vonda previously directed “Twelfth Night” for WSC in 2006.  Vonda has also acted in many past WSC shows. Most recently, she was Lady Macbeth in “Macbeth” and Mistress Page in “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” The impressive cast assembled for this production includes Elizabeth Anderson as Kate and Jeffrey Faus as Petruchio. The supporting players are Jim Crawley, Jamie Smith, John Sommerhauser, Dan Schuster, Kevin Sowers, Ben Blankley, Katie Corbin, Danzel Muzingo Bond, Joey LeCompte, Stephanie Brean, Robert Esau Rutherford, Ben Sanders, Amanda Montoya, and Jessica Fisher.

Shakespeare-in-the-Park will return to the very popular Central Riverside, Buffalo, and College Hill Parks in Wichita.  For this show, the Central Riverside Park performances are being presented in conjunction with the Wichita River Festival.  Parks in Andover, Park City, Derby, and Haysville will complete the tour.  All shows will begin at 7:00 pm, with an approximate running time of an hour and a half.  As always, the play is performed free to all audiences but donations are accepted and appreciated.  Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and, of course, bug spray.

In the event of inclement weather, there will be a message posted at 6 pm on the WSC line (316-655-2017) alerting if the show has been cancelled for that evening.

→]]> Wichita Shakespeare Company will be having auditions for Taming of the Shrew on April 25th and 26th, from 7pm to 10pm at University Friends Church.

University Friends Church is located at 1840 W. University Ave. in Wichita.

Rehearsals will begin with a read through on May 2nd and two blocking rehearsals on May 3rd and 4th. Regular weekday rehearsals start on May 9th, and continue until opening night. Performance dates are June 3rd through June 19th, Friday through Sunday at 7pm.

Wichita Shakespeare Company presents Macbeth, performed in the parks around the city. See below for performance schedule. Admission is free. All shows start at 7 pm.

The play is directed by Mark Schuster, who is making his directorial debut with WSC.  Mark is a veteran WSC actor. Previous credits include “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, “Romeo and Juliet”, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, and “Much Ado about Nothing”. The impressive cast assembled for this production includes Jim Crawley as Macbeth, Vonda Schuster as Lady Macbeth, and Ed Belsan as Macduff. The supporting players are Deb Campbell, Elizabeth Anderson, Charlene Grinsell, Mary Tush-Green, Stephanie Dennis, Crystal Meek, Stephanie Brean, Frankie Dennis, Asha Belsan, Spencer Jones, Adrian Kinney, Luke Ebersole, Ben Blankley, Robert Esau Rutherford, Cody Esau Rutherford, Robert Ryder, Ben Sanders, Larry Belew, and Joey LeCompte.
