“Othello”
Presented by the Wichita Shakespeare Company
The Wichita Shakespeare Company (WSC) closes its 2016 Shakespeare-in-the-Park series with “Othello.” The famous tragedy tells the tale of love turned bad by unfounded jealousy. In this modern adaptation, the play’s theme of racial tension seems all the more relevant.
The show is directed by first-time WSC director Paula Makar. Makar is an instructor at Wichita State University School of the Performing Arts. She is also a regular actress in the Wichita theatre scene, having performed with the Fourm Theatre and at the Crown Uptown. The large impessive cast she has assembled for this production includes Huron Breaux as Othello, Bryan Welsby as Iago, Sheena Monroe as Desdemona, and Noah Segard as Cassio. Others in the cast include Chelsey Moore, Matt Gurley, Shane Rogers, Dan Schuster, Vonda Schuster, Beckie Jenek, Hugo Castillo, Ben Blankley, Susan Guntly, Andrea Lee, and Elijah Klein.
Shakespeare-in-the-Park will return to the very popular Central Riverside and College Hill Parks in Wichita. New this year is a performance at Harvest Park in Wichita. Parks in Andover, Park City, and Derby will complete the tour. Additionally, a special indoor performance will be held at the Wichita Scottish Rites Center. All shows will begin at 7:00 pm, with an approximate running time of two hours. As always, the play is performed free to all audiences but donations are accepted and appreciated. Those attending the park performances are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and, of course, bug spray. (Note: Seating will be provided for the indoor performance).
In the event of inclement weather, there will be a message posted at 6 pm on the WSC line (316-655-2017) alerting if the show has been cancelled for that evening.
